"Cyrus: Source of Darkness"
by Jack Frink
(Vol. 19, June 2008)

"At the recent ourstage.com music competition, Lubbock's own Cyrus placed first in the alternative rock category and second overall for the contest.

It's just another stp up the ladder for a group that wants to do "the thing every band wants to," according to guitarist Nathan Timmons.

"There's a lot of nihilism in alternative rock but we want there to be glimmers of hope in there," Timmons said.

Cyrus is made up of four guys: drummer Chris Knight, 27; Jude Machin, 30, is in charge of guitars, vocals and pianos; Michael Sanford, 30, handles the low end with bass and additional vocals.

Timmons says the bands success is contingent on support from the local college scene. "We want a mix of art and accessibility.  We don't want to compromise but we keep the college area in mind.  We're aware of who we're playing to."

After giving a listen to Cyrus's newest CD, there's nothing but good thoughts in my head.

It's tough for a hard-nosed music critic to be surprised by anything on a new CD. But after listening to Source, the cynicism is worn down, and what grows in its place is appreciation for a band with ambition beyond the lowest common denominator. There is variety and an excellent use of dynamics throughout. Also, the songs never overstay their welcome. The album is brisk, compelling, and easy to play over and over again."
